STRADA LASTRICATA DEL TRIANO

By the Church of Triano, on the track leading down towards the woods you can see an ancient paved road recently rediscovered following work by the local village association. Experts consider this road to date from the Middle Ages but it probably followed an older Roman route. It was the main road that led up to Montefollonico from the direction of Montepulciano and then continues from the opposite side of the village, at the Follonica Gate, down to the Abbey of Follonica. In parts the road is about 7 metres wide with channels across the track to redirect the course of rainwater. The stone used was excavated on the spot and in some places existing stone was simply levelled without being excavated.
Route of Roman origin; the visible pavement has been dated to the Middle Ages
